Launch Party, Goodwood Racing Circuit UK (Part 1)

Saturday 16th July

This was it, the culmination of 10 months of excitement and little to no planning, we were off in Marigold the Micra to Goodwood Racing Circuit for the official launch party of the Mongol Rally 2016. Spirits were high, suspension was low and optimism was off the chart. After a fair few funny looks and liberal blasting of the la cucaracha horn, we made it to the circuit and were greeted by a sea of the most ridiculous set of vehicles we’ve ever seen. Never has there been such a collection of edgy petrol-heads in one place.

Paint jobs were first to catch the eye, ranging from bright pink, to a green Thunderbird 2 to a dalmatian dog. By the looks of things some teams had literally strapped a can of the cheapest Halfords spray paint to a firework and aimed it at their car. But as we were constantly reminded, the “f*ck it, that’ll do” approach epitomises what the Rally is all about. There were teams who had attached boats, giraffes, mobility scooters, sand pits and even full living rooms to the roof of their cars.

Marigold and some of her fellow ralliers
After having a good old hoot at many of these monstrosities we headed over to the main arena where we washed down a few jars and boogied to a live Mongolian band. The atmosphere was then cranked up a notch by “DJ Linda” who, fresh from her yurt, dropped her new exclusive Mongolian techno mixtape. The place was bouncing! We then headed to bed in anticipation of the big send off the following day.
