Waking
up on Day 60 in an actual bed was one of the most glorious feelings we had
experienced on the rally so far. It was long overdue and well deserved. After a
speedy breakfast at the shopping centre opposite we regained our momentum and
headed towards Moscow. With only 420km to cover we thought what a doddle of a
day this would be. Our ETA was set for mid afternoon so we sat back, enjoyed
the bustle of urban Russia and coasted towards the country’s capital. Just as
we were building steam we hit severe road works and were forced to slow to a
complete stop. Not now for Christ’s sake. We then ended up moving the grand
total of just 2km in 2 hours, long enough to watch an entire film. Thankfully
we did just that as we stuck the Inbetweeners 2 movie on the dashboard. Just as
the film ended wild celebrations ensued as for the first time in nearly 3 hours
we hit third gear. Tears of joy were actually visible on all our faces.
When we eventually reached Moscow it was 9pm at night. Starving and in need of some alcoholic relief, we found the nearest steak house and plumped for their finest sirloin and vintage red. That first bite of moist, tender pink meat more than made up for the past four days of Big Macs, Meatball Marinaras and flavourless broth out of a polystyrene bowl. As we reflected on the 5467km we had driven in the past 4 days, we soon became carried away. Three rounds of double gin and tonics later we were already planning our next venture, a February ski trip to the Alps.
