Friday 5th August
On another blisteringly hot day we headed up to the top of Ali
Abad’s main tourist attraction, a large waterfall. Once at the top we were met
by a large crowd of animated locals who were enjoying a national holiday in the
refreshing pools cut out of the rock. One man had brought his pillow along and
was bellowing air into it like a bagpipe whilst his mate was thumping away at
his boran drum. Below them a crowd had formed a circle around one of the
shallow pools where a group of men were gyrating wildly to the music. For
heterosexual males their dance moves were startlingly flirtatious. Hip thrusts,
twerking and light bulb screwing all featured as the party atmosphere
intensified.
Back on the road we set off for Shirvan and passed the 5,000-mile point for the entire trip so far. 14 countries, 19 days and 41 chapters of Harry Potter, we briefly reflected on how far we’d come, gave Marigold a pat on the hatchback and continued on our quest. Only another 15,000 miles to go….
